Chrysler Repair: Instrument panel doesnt light up: 91 Imperial, chrsyler imperial, analog gauge

Question
Have a 1991 Chrsyler Imperial 3.3 and everything is fine except the instrument panel won't light up to show the speed or fuel or anything, was told that maybe the cluster board(?) needs to be replaced, is this ttype of part still available or what do you think it might be?

Answer
Hi Debbie,
I would check fuses 5, 8, and 12 looking carefully at each to make sure there is not a subtle crack in the internal wire. I assume that you have the digital electronic cluster, not the conventional analog gauge type, so let me know if that is not the case. If the fuses are OK then it would be worthwhile to remove the cluster and check the circuit board plug-in pins and the trace connectors that are soldered to those pins to make sure they are not disconnected. If you had a solder pencil you could reheat each joint to be certain. Finally it would be necessary to find a replacement or have an electronics hobbyist look for a failed component on the board which if replaced would restore its function. I doubt there are any in stock at Chrysler Corp but you could ask at a dealer parts department. The price will be high. You might be able to get a used one from a wrecking yard which is connected to a nationwide internet of such yards.
That is my suggestion as to how to get this going again. Let me know if you need instruction as to how to remove the cluster.
