Chrysler Repair: 88 New Yorker cranks but doesnt start, code translation, spark coil

Question
Hello again Roland,

My 88 new yorker with a 3.0 litre will rotate but will not start. As far as I can tell, there is no power getting to the fuel pump. I can't hear anything when the ignition is turned to the ON position. There is a nice blue spark at the coil. The cap had some corrosion build up on the points so I removed the corrosion. Now the engine turns over and just as it seems its going to catch, it doesn't, it's like there is no gas...there is though. This was happening before I cleaned the points on the cap. I'm thinking it is the ASD relay. It's providing power for a spark but not the fuel pump. What do you think?

Thank you
Ron

Answer
Hi Ron,
The ASD relay on that engine/year powers up the spark coil, the fuel injectors, and the fuel pump in parallel on a dark green/black wire. If you can't hear the fuel pump run even though you are getting 12V at the spark coil and a spark output, then I would suspect either that the same color wire to the fuel pump is not connected, or it is then the fuel pump is no longer working. So test for 12v to be present at the fuel pump for about 1 second after a helper turns on the ignition switch to the run position, and then try cranking it and verify that you have 12V while cranking. Listen for the hum of the pump for that first 1 second test. Once you start cranking it may be difficult to hear but the absence of the 1 second hum coming from the tank is diagnostic.
Otherwise check for fault codes with the ignition key: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less. Then watch the check engine light to begin to flash, pause, flash, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, then repeat the process to verify the count accuracy. Then group the counts in the order of appearance to form the 2-digit fault code numbers. Go to www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html for a code translation or write me back for help.
