Chrysler Repair: Idling low at stop, wd 40, throttle plate

Question
In the past few months I have noticed an oil leak but it has not been anything serious. The only problem I have noticed since the oil leak is that my rpms at idle have went from a steady 750rpm down to 500-550rpm. I asked someone else about this and they said that as long as my oil pressure light doesn't come on then I am doing fine. Well, today on the way to school after driving for about an hour, my oil pressure light came on. I was sitting at a red light and my rpms dropped to 500 and my oil light would flicker on and off. If I put it in neutral or gave it some gas the light would cut off. I checked my oil level and it is fine and I have been using 10w40 since it is a 10 year old car w/ 145k miles. Any suggestions?

Answer
The oil pressure light is going to do that because of low rpm but it is not a sign of a problem in and of itself. You might want to clean out the throttle body air by-pass valve and the throttle plate itself, and if that doesn't help take out the automatic idle speed motor at the throttle body and clean its tip and the passage way in which it operates.  Finally check that the egr valve stem moves freely back and forth and if it doesn't close reliably due to the spring pressure then lubricate the stem with WD-40 where it enters the valve body.
So focus on the cause, not the effect. The oil pressure is no problem unless the light comes on at rpm's above about 750.
