Chrysler Repair: Fuel Tank 2001 Town Country LXi, hard to fill, chrysler dealer, mechanical stress

Question
Hello,

It is the second time that it is happening and i can t get the fuel tank to fill up fast. Basically, when i get to the gas station when tank is empty, the gas filler gun keeps poping off thinking that the tank is full when it is empty. Only when i fill in at a very slow rate that i can get the tank to fill up but it takes very very long obviously. Any idea on the problem and fix would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time. Best Regards,
Lotfi

Answer
Hi Lotfi,
I looked in my '98 manual for the van and found nothing mechanical mentioned that would cause such a problem.
I don't know of any restrictive device in the filler tube or tank entry, but it might be worth discussing this possibility with the Chrysler dealer parts counter salesperson. He will have a drawing of the supply tube, etc. in his computer that you can examine.  The other possibility is that the flexible tube between the fill opening and the tank entry neck has been squeezed together either by mechanical stress from the outside or from vacuum  build-up inside the tank and so it no longer has the effective diameter that it is supposed to have. You could take a look under the van near the fill opening to see if you can observe the condition of the flexible tube for any malformation.
Those are the only two things that I can suggest as possibilities. An owner of a Lebaron told me of a similar problem but I didn't hear back from him as to what was the cause. Please let me know if you find something that explains the problem.
