Chrysler Repair: Sebring wont start: after run out of gas, fuel pump relay, socket pins

Question
My girlfriend ran her 96 Sabring out of fuel. I was told to put six gallons of gas in it and keep cranking it until it started. I have done so and the car will not start. What do I need to do to reprime the fuel jets? Is there any damage that may have been caused by running out of fuel?

Answer
Hi Brian,
I looked at the '98 manual and it says that after the tank is emptied there is a "routine" that is run using the Diagnostic Readout Box III test tool available at a dealer. But it appears to me that all it does is to run the fuel pump for 7 minutes, though I can't be certain whether there might be some other things it does. So I would try that. Find the fuel pump relay in the power distribution center under the hood (3rd socket from the front, of a total of 8 sockets), remove the relay, and simply use a wire to jump between the 2 socket pins that are side by side (may be labelled 27 and 35, but in any case the other 3 that are side by side are not involved, just that pair). You should hear the fuel pump hum for the full 7 minutes. Then put the relay back.  Then see if it will start. It may help to charge the battery too.
Let me know how this works out, please.
