Chrysler Repair: Fuel smell in cabin upon fillup of 300M, fuel supply system, body cars

Question
I have a 1999 300m and every time i refuel the car the cabin fills up with the smell of gas, what could be the problem ?

Answer
Hi Judd,
The fuel pump module and rollover/pressure safety release valve are located on the top of the tank which is under the trunk. If you look in the trunk you will find an access panel with an air tight gasket, under the carpeting, which you can remove to inspect that part of the tank. I suspect that there must be some sort of a malfunction in that area and the fumes are entering the cabin after first leaking into the trunk via the access panel in the floor of the trunk. I can't see another weak area in the fuel supply system that would produce a prompt odor in the cabin. You might observe for any signs of leakage on the ground below the tank which might be related to leak in the filler pipe connection to the tank. If the odor is present at the time of fill up it would have to involve that area of the system it would seem to me. I haven't seen any troubleshooting suggestions for this sort of a problem so I'm just looking at the design that is applicable for the LH body cars which first came out in '93 and assume that same design is applicable to your '99.
Please let me know if you find something amiss at that area of the top of the tank or a leak in the gasket for the access panel. That gasket is replaceable.
