Chrysler Repair: 1992 Chyrsler LeBaron Convertible Motor, power door locks, motor armature

Question
my top goes up and down and then just quits? Is there a relay or anyway to test the motor? I can hear power going to the motor---I can hear it click but the motor doesn't turn?  Any tricks? Thank You

Answer
Hi Harold,
You are hearing the relay that is mounted on top of the motor click, which means that the operating switch and relay actuation coil are working. So if you always get the click then it has to be one of three things that are needed to power the motor: good electrical switch contacts inside the relay, power from the circuit breaker in fuse box cavity #3 under the dash, and brushes in the motor proper. That breaker also operates the power door locks, and power seat, and horn so if those work then power is getting to the relay. You can then go to the motor itself where there is a disconnect and put a neon glow light or voltmeter across the two terminals on the side that is coming from the relay and test for whether or not 12V is getting to the disconnect. The polarity reverses depending upon whether you are asking for up or down. If that proves out, then it has to be the brushes in the motor proper that are worn down too far to be reliable. You can remove those brushes and go to a motor rebuilding service and buy replacements. That should do it. But if not, then the motor armature may need to be serviced at the rebuilder.
