Chrysler Repair: Grand Voyager 2.5crd 03 stalls when throttle opened, exhaust gas recirculation valve, vacuum hoses

Question
my voyager has started to cut out when you put your foot down at around 3000rpm. it just dies, but when you stop, it usually sarts first time! it seems to be consistant when i have just filled up? It have just had it serviced at a local garage, hoping that having the filters changed would sort it but it hasnt?

Answer
Hi Lee,
As stated in my bio I do not claim expertise beyond the late '90's so even the acronym "crd" is a mystery. But based upon earlier year experience I would want to check out the exhaust gas recirculation valve and its vacuum hoses and electrical solenoid. That egr valve is open when you are operating at part throttle in order to cut down on nitrous oxide which produces smog. However when you either open the throttle wide or idle it if the valve doesn't close the mixture will be too lean which causes the engine to stall. So look for a small pipe that branches off the pipe that runs from the front exhaust manifold to the rear exhaust manifold and goes to a valve that has a round vacuum actuator attached to the valve by an open-sided flange. Inside the flange you will see a rod with a circumferential slot. If you take the tip of a screwdriver and insert it in the slot you can move the rod up and down against spring pressure in one direction. Verify that it moves easily to a full stop via spring pressure, and if not spray some lubricant on the stem where it enters the body of the valve. Then examine the vacuum hoses to be sure they are attached at both ends and not cracked. Finally check any electrical wires associated with the valve controls.
That would be my best idea for a reason of your stalling.
I hope it works for you. It is a part that is less well monitored by the engine controller so it won't always set a fault code in the engine controller memory. If you haven't had the memory readout for fault codes that would be another thing to do. Some autoparts stores will do that for free (e.g.Autozone) otherwise have it done at a shop.
