Thank you for your very quick and helpful response. Could you please tell me where the blower resister is? The books I have only show how to remove the blower motor and have no other information

I have a 1991 new yorker fifth avenue, everthing on the car still works except for an anoying heater/air blower problem, The car has manual controls, not the climate control, sometimes the blower will only run in the high speed setting and not in the 3 lower speed settings, other times it will only run in the 2 lower speed settings and not the 3rd or high setting. It does not matter what I have selected and there seems to be no pattern to it's annoying function. Is there a simple answer to fix this problem, or do I need some further diagnostic testing.

Normally I would say that the blower resister is the problem. When it goes bad,you only have high speed. But with your other problem it leads me to the switch. You may have something going on with the contacts. But I still wouldn't rule out the blower resister.

Answer
I'm pretty sure on that car it is under the windshield cowl. That is under the wiper arms.Take the arms off and remove the cowl (big black piece that lays up against the bottom of the windshield)The resister should be bolted into the firewall with a connector with 5 or 6 wires. It is possible the connector could  be melted. If so,they are available.Just make sure you solder the new wires.
