Chrysler Repair: Electronic transaxle doesnt engage reliably, 4 digit numbers, diagnostic capability

Question
when i drive my car (automatic) it sometimes will not catch gears.  when i first drive it is fine but once i drive for a while and then stop at a light and start to drive again, it jumps and then will not catch gear. if i turn off the car and then restart it it then starts to catch gears, but sometimes i have to turn off and restart my car multiple times until it starts to work correctly.  what is going on?

Answer
Hi Marcus,
It appears that the electronic transaxle is having a problem. There is an on-board self-diagnostic capability that you should try to take advantage of to find out what the trans controller sees to be wrong. There is a 16-pin plug under the dash into which a code reader is plugged to gain access to the memory of the controller. Some auto parts stores will do a readout for free and tell you what the fault codes are (e.g. Autozone stores, or for fee an auto repair shop will do it). The codes are P followed by 4 digit numbers. So get the numbers, ask them what is the title of the code (what it means), and then write back and tell me what you found. If I am maxed out, use the "rate the expert" to reach me quickly, using the comments section.
It could be something that can be repaired without removing the trans. Also, use the dipstick on the tranmission to check the fluid level. If you need to add any, get a quart from a Chrysler dealer, but don't overfill it which can cause damage.
