Chrysler Repair: Replacing the ABS controller (computer), chrysler products, abs light

Question
My ABS light can on is has stayed on for some time now.  I had it assessed as was told that it needed a new "computer" switch.  The cost would be about $250.00 +.  Is this a component that I can fix myself?  If so what would it entail ?

Answer
Hi Ralph,
I checked my 94 shop manual and find that replacing the controller for the anti-lock brakes system (CAB) is pretty easy to do. The important procedural safeguard is to always have the ignition switch in the off position when you unplug or plug it into its 60-way electrical connector. It is located on the right side frame rail in the forward corner of the engine compartment, and there is a relay and a mechanical holder for the CAB. I can xerox and postal mail you the 2 pages that describe how to change it out. If you would like that, use the "rate the expert" tab where you will find a place for comments, and tell me your address there. You might be able to find a replacement CAB at a wrecking yard at a significantly lower cost, but make sure that it is identical to yours by checking the model numbers. It is a Bendix 4 unit and was the only type described in the '94 manual so it may be identical to other models of Chrysler products for that year.
I don't know how much the shop wants for labor but it is something that you can do yourself quickly with a few wrenches/sockets.
