Chrysler Repair: 1986 shelby charger 2.2 turbo, shelby charger, rich mixture

Question
I have owned a 1986 shelby charger 2.2 turbo since 1987. until this point it has been a good car, last summer the pick up coil failed and I replaced the distributor and the pick up coil. after that repair it would idle high(3000) rpm and after 5 minutes or so it would idle down to normal. This past week I drove it and it would not return to normal, it burned 3 gallons of fuel in 35 miles and is blowing black carbon out the tail pipe, I have the diagnostic read out box and am showing a 22,23,44,46 fault codes I have followed the drivabilaty diagnostic procedure which said to replace the coolant tempature sender with out any luck, I have checked the wiring for open circuits in the coolant tempature circuit. any thoughts on what might be wrong? I know it is running rich as the plugs were fouled black

Answer
Hi Mark,
The 23 code says that the charge temp sensor (located on the intake manifold adjacent to the knock sensor)is faulty.
It has the same resistance specs as the coolant sensor: 7,000 to 13,000 ohms at 70F dropping to 700-1,000 ohms at 200F. So I would take a look at that sensor next. If it didn't drop its resistance then you could get a too rich mixture. Also, although it didn't code you might want to consider replacing the oxygen sensor if it has been in for a long time. Lastly would be to consider whether one or more of the injectors has become leaky. Maybe compare the plugs with one another to see if any look wetter than the others.
Those are the main determinants of mixture.
Let me know if any of these suggestions work out for you, please.
