Chrysler Repair: 97 sebring service engine codes, high water mark, coolant temp

Question
i read previous questions on how to turn ignition on, off, on, off and then on and read the codes as the service engine soon light flashes...i received codes 12, 17, and 22...i asked a question earlier about my coolant temp sensor and i believe i read that code 22 is for that and was just wondering what do the other codes mean...also i was wondering how to change the coolant temp sensor...i see it is attached to a bolt and do you have to do it quick so air isn't released into the coolant system..thanks

Answer
Hi Colt,
The 17 means that the engine coolant appears to not be warming up quickly enough, but that may not be true if the coolant temp sensor's resistance is not droping down as the coolant warms up (code 22). I think I told you the resistance specs for the sensor. So if the sensor is bad that probably explains the 17 code. The sensor appears to simply screw into a hole in the cylinder head. No need to rush it because it is pretty much at the high water mark. You should apply some sealant to the threads of the new sensor (loctite 24200 or equivalent). Tighten the sensor to 5 ft-lbs.  The 12 is common, it means that the battery was disconected some time in the past 50-100 key on-off cycles.
