Chrysler Repair: 95 LeBaron Cooling Fan Dead, battery clamps, radiator fan

Question
Roland,

I did read thru one answer you gave on a '95 overheat problem, and want to verify my understanding.  My radiator fan on my recently aquired LeBaron is not working.  The AC does work so if I understand correctly then the fan relay I recently replaced is okay.  I have not been able to track down a fuse on the circuit for the fan.  So my final options are possibly a bad sensor or a bad motor correct?  Would having someone check engine diagnostic codes (but check engine light has never been on) help me troubleshoot this problem better?  A shop wants to charge me $40 just to check it.  Is there a quick way to check the fan motor without removing it?  Thanks for your advice.

Answer
Hi Johnny,
If the ac compressor works, then the fan relay is working and the fuse that supplies both the fan and the ac clutch is ok (20 amp, #52 in the power distribution center). I suspect it is the fan motor not the sensor that is bad, because the fan is given power when the AC is requested regardless of the temperature of the engine. So what you can do is carefully disconect the fan at its plug very nearby to the motor. Then carefully jump two wires from the battery clamps to the fan plug (+ wire to the light green wire and - wire to the black wire, though it probably won't matter which way you apply the wires, the fan will either run or it won't). If it doesn't run, then you need to replace the fan motor. If it does run, then there is a break in the light green wire from the fan relay to the fan motor or the black ground wire that grounds to the engine (top front bank). So check that out and let me know if something other than this happens.
