Chrysler Repair: Electronic transmission acts up when cold, chrysler new yorker, chrysler drb

Question
Sir:
on some mornings my 1994 Chrysler New Yorker will not go into reverse and will only go into limp mode when I drive forward in drive.  If I drive it for a short distance shut it off wait about ten seconds and start it up then put it in reverse it will shift normally after that.  I think that the Computer might be the problem.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Richard,
It would be good to check the fluid level in the trans, but only add Chrysler brand trans fluid; don't overfill. It might also be low trans fluid pressure due to a partially clogged filter or weak pump internal to the trans, or even too low an idle speed. If you haven't changed the filter in the trans in many miles it may be worth trying that.
Reading out the computer for fault codes would be worthwhile as well. If you get any codes (by specific number) ask what they mean, what are the possible corrective actions, what is the estimated cost. Then write back and we'll compare notes with the manual. If the computer is the fault there are codes for that: 11, 13, 16, 17. The readout requires a Chrysler DRB II (OBD-I generation) reader or equivalent and is accessed by a blue six pin socket under the dash to the right of the steering column (not the same plug as used to access the engine controller). I would go to a dealer or independent shop with the necessary reader rather than a franshise trans shop (whose approach is to sell you a "rebuild"). Ask if the readout cost would be credited to any repair that you might subsequently authorize.
