Chrysler Repair: 87 New Yorker non-turbo TBI, stalls, wont idle., throttle position sensor, egr valve

Question
I have replaced the injector, pump, filter, rotor, throttle position sensor and MAP on this 87 New Yorker. Timing belt was new last fall 5K ago. The car will start then immediatly stall. I can keep the car running by spraying fuel down the throttle body and occasionally it will start on its own by pumping the throttle excessively, but will not run at any one speed or under a load. The power loss light did not light up when I tried the self diagonsis but then I am not sure the self diagnois test, but then I am not sure the New Yorkers had this feature.

Answer
O.K., the egr has been checked, but what about the fault codes? I would only indict the hall effect sensor if you get a code 11 and you don't have spark for a full 5 seconds of cranking. Do you have spark? So there is no point in guessing. Get the fault codes amd check for spark.

Hi Todd,
Yes the 2.2L has the self-diagnostic: "on-off-on-off-on and leave on" doing that in 5 seconds or less elapsed time. Then watch for the check engine light which is "on" to begin to flash, pause, etc. Then count the flashes before each pause, repeat the readout for accuracy, then group the numbers in pairs to form the two digit fault codes. The last number is going to be 55...end of readout. You can get a code translation at www.allpar.com/fix/codes.html
or write back with the numbers and I can give you some direction as to how to correct the situation. You might also want to check the egr valve's stem to make sure it moves freely back and forth against spring tension and closes all the way. It has a slot into which you insert the tip of a screwdriver to lever the stem. That can cause a too lean mixture if it is stuck ajar. Put some penetrating oil on the stem where it enters the valve body to free it up if necessary.
