Chrysler Repair: Neon: can gauge cluster with a tach be substituted?, tach cluster, dodge neon

Question
I have a 1997 Dodge Neon with the standard guage cluster (no tach). I would like to install one that has a tach. What changes will have to be made to make this work?

Answer
Hi Jeff,
I don't have detailed wiring diagrams for the Neon, but the best way to tell would be to compare the plugs for the two types of clusters. If there is no specific wiring for the tach then that would indicate that the signal to drive it is provided on the data bus wires that are already there for all the other instruments and warning lights. If on the other hand there appears to be a separate wire for the tach then you will need to tap in appropriately at the powertrain controller to get that wire to the cluster plug.
It may well be that the tach signal is already arriving at the non-tach cluster and just being ignored. So maybe the best way to find out would be to go to a dealer parts counter and ask for their advice and to look a the computer record of the plugs for the two clusters.
