Answer
Hi Tom,
If you could identify the exact spot of the leak that might be helpful. The water pump is in the front of block and is hidden by the timing belt covers. The water return to the pump from the back side of it comes along the pipe that is in the groove between the two cylinder banks that you will see at the rear of the engine. There could be leak in the o-ring seal at the connection of that pipe to pump back and the water runs rearward and out the rear groove, or the pump seal could be leaking on the pulley side in which case the water tends to run out from the front of the engine and near the bottom around the crankshaft pulley. The former can be fixed by removing the pipe and installing a new o-ring, while the latter requires changing the water pump which, unless the timing belt has been changed recently, would also be a time to change the timing belt since they are all part of the same job and while you are doing one it is prudent to do both. The procedure requires some tools and a floor jack to support the engine. If you can borrow those I can xerox and postal mail you the instructions for how to do it or you can get it at www.allpar.com/fix/3liter-timingbelts.html  Once you get to the point where the timing belt is to be replaced you can remove the water pump and install the new one. Then complete the timing belt job.
You may be in luck if the water is running out the rear groove as that o-ring is an easy repair compared to the water pump.
