Chrysler Repair: 93 Concord transmission not shifting/ how to diagnose?, chrysler concord, performance flaw

Question
About 6 months ago I put a rebuilt transmission in.  Now, after 4,000 miles, intermittently the car will start out in 2ed gear and not shif out. Usually in the morning when I first drive the car.  If I stop and shut off the engine it will start to work again.  Is there anything in the OBD compter read out that can help identify the problem?  1993 Chrysler Concord 3.3.

Thanks,

Carl

Answer
Hi Carl,
Yes there are on-board diagnostics in the transmission controller, just like in the engine controller. However the memory data cannot be accessed except via a body bus diagnostic socket that is located under the dash using a distinct plug attached to a Chrysler DRB II or similar readout unit.
The codes that are stored will suggest what is the performance flaw and possible reasons for the malfunction. You are experiencing a type of operation called limp-in mode which is designed to keep the vehicle moving while avoiding use of many parts so as to avoid unnecessary further damage. So my suggestion would be to go to either a dealer or a competent independent shop that has the necessary plug and reader to access the body bus and have the transmission controller readout for fault codes, tell you the numbers, what are the possible reasons, repair recommendations and estimated cost. Then write me back with that information and we can compare that to the Chrysler shop manual of that time period.
