Chrysler Repair: fuelpump on 318 cu. in engine, fuelpump, lockring

Question
i was wondering how to change a fuelpump on a 1987 chrysler fifth avenue- 318 engine.

Answer
Hi Duane,
I don't have clarity on your vehicle. Is it a V-8 with fuel injection or carburetion? My references tell me it has a carburetor and if that were the case the fuel pump would be mounted on the engine and driven by one of the camshafts. So that would be a simple unbolt from the engine type of change. If it is a fuel injected engine then the pump is electrical and is in the fuel tank which is only a problem because you may have to lower the tank for clearance to remove it. It has the larger of the two lock-rings, and you may have to also loosen the fittings at the fender on the fuel fill pipe in order to lower the tank enough to get the pump out. Just tap on the lockring with a soft drift and malet to loosen and remove it, then the fuel pump should pull out of the tank.
