Answer
Hi Chris,
You are probably 'ahead' of me on troubleshooting the ETAX but here goes:
The cvi's look to be within the expected range.
And changing the speed sensors was a good idea given the 731 and 733 codes. But the 1790 (earlier OBD-I code=36), from what I have read, is the 'killer'. It states that code, when coupled to ratio error codes, means you have to assume that it is an internal mechanical problem. It doesn't seem in the cards that an hydraulic problem is the explanation.
A 2004 trans manual gives several possible tests to consider doing when you have the 1790: shift lever position and shift lever signal; consider software upgrades to the control module and check for any technical service bulletins... but barring something positive from those, you are left with looking at the internal mechanical situation.
Given the cost/magnitude of the rebuild pathway I would suggest finding a good trans shop and see if they can find anyother solution short of removal and rebuild. It is too bad you can't catch up with the shop that did the previous rebuild.
