Chrysler Repair: Chrysler LeBaron 92 3.0Liter, oil pressure gauge, chrysler lebaron

Question
I let the gas level get low because I wanted to
refill with super since I've been using regular
because of gas prices.  For the first time since
I've had the car it wouldn't come on. "Check gauges" came on intermitently and the oil gauge
blinked.  I changed the spark plugs, fuel filter,
air filter, and got an oil change.  Car seems to
run better -- no stalling but I still get flashes
of "Check gauges" the oil gauge needle swings wildly intermitently with the little oil can icon
next to it blinking.  This is right after an oil and oil filter change.

Answer
It's possible you've got a bad oil pressure sending unit or you have an oiling related issue and the gauge on your dash is actually correct.  The only way to check this would be to have both an mechanical/hydraulic oil pressure gauge (mechanic's personal tool in addition to using the factory system.  Then the mechanic could monitor true oil pressure and compare it to readings on your dash.  My GUESS is that you've got a bad sending unit.

Also, your car wasn't designed to run with high test.  In a perfect running car you'd just be wasting money and probably causing long term damage.  Fuel octane has nothing to do with fuel quality and actually changes the rate of burn (engine timing).

At this point I would suggest finding out what's wrong with the oil issue.  THEN I would stop running high octane fuel in the car and find out how to improve driveability through maintenance.  This could include timing belt replacement (it stretches thus throwing off timing), a tune-up with new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, and checking ignition timing to verify that it's firing at the right time.
