Chrysler Repair: 1990 Lebaron Brake Problem, lebaron convertible, hydraulic problem

Question
I purchased a 1990 Lebaron convertible from a friend, she bought it new so it had a good history. I am having problems with the front left brake not releasing properly or rubbing. It will sometimes get so hot that you can smell the brakes. I replaced the calipers, rotors and pads. In fact I replaced this caliper twice thinking that must be the problem. Help.

Answer
I would check the slide that the caliper rides on.  If it's heavily pitted then the caliper will slip down in to this groove and constantly be applying alot of pressure to the rotor causing it to get hot.

Next make sure that the caliper slides are properly lubed.  Lack of lube will again prevent full-disengagement of the caliper.

The next thing would be to have the front of the vehicle raised off the ground.  Spin the wheels and see if either of them drag alot indicating a constant drag vs a hydraulic problem.  It's FWD so it's going to have a bit of drag but you'll be looking for a noticeable difference from side to side.

It's possible that there's a hydraulic problem such as a bad proportioning valve but most of the time the problem is a bit more mechanical than hydraulic.

Check those things and let me know what you find.
