Chrysler Repair: where is the thermostat located in a 1997 sebring JXI?, coolant system, aluminum tubes

Question
My radiator has bee n flushed and water pump replaced 8 months ago. I just started overheating again and need to replace the thermostat but do not know where it is located. I also seem to be getting a lot of rust , what should I do?

Answer
If this is a 2.5L engine, which it should be since it's JXi model then it is located below the radiator cap area.  There's a couple of aluminum tubes that come together and the large radiator hose meets the aluminum housing.  There are three bolts that hold the housing to the coolant inlet elbow.  Remove the three bolts after draining the coolant and you will be able to see the thermostat.

Sometimes multiple flushes will be needed to fully remove any abnormal discoloration from the coolant system.  In other conditions you will have contamination from metal components breaking down like the water pump, thermostat, radiator and heater core.

Don't forget to check your radiator cap and replace it if you have not already done so.  It's very likely that you are pushing coolant out in to your resevior by using a worn out cap and that's causing your overheating condition.
