i want to know what the problem could be and can i fix it at home.

Answer
Disconnect the battery and leave it alone for about 20 minutes.  You may have some wiring that's exposed or subject to shorting because of the water.  After the 20 mins, reconnect the battery and drive it.  If you still cannot get it to shift gears you will need to have the fault codes retrieved by a repair shop.  This shop needs to have a scan tool that can not only talk with the engine control module but also the transmission control module.

Let me know what you find.
