Chrysler Repair: re-charging empty a.c. system, haynes manual, wont kick

Question
hello my question is this just changed the evaporator core in my van and after i was all doen and went to recharge the system the a/c clutch would not engage after some reseach i discovered that there is a sensor that keeps the clutch from engageing whne there is no freon in the system. so how do i refill the system if the a/c pump wont kick in to  take the charge? thanks for your time

Answer
Hi Jeremiah,
I would be hesitant to recharge the system from empty if you don't have the equipment required to do it in a manner that will not damage the compressor. As I read the Chrysler manuals they show a set up that uses two gauges and a vacuum pump in very specific ways to refill the unit. There is the suggestion in the Haynes manual that if the compressor won't start when you are refilling a partially filled system that you can remove the plug for the pressure sensor switch and jump the two terminals so as to by-pass it and cause the compressor to be activated. I don't have the personal experience to recommend doing that under your situation. If it were my car I would take it to an a.c. shop and let them do it. They also have a leak detector and other special tools that might be good to bring to this part of your repair. But if you want to take the risk, then you can bypass the pressure cut-off switch.
