Chrysler Repair: Dodge Neon Oil Pressure Light, dodge neon, pressure gauge

Question
My 1996 Dodge Neon oil pressure light came on the other day. I stopped and checked the oil...oil level ok. The light didn't come on today. Could this be a sensor or pump problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Lou,
If the light came on when the car was in gear and moving such that the rpm was greater than idle rate, then it is worth putting a pressure gauge on the tap into which the oil pressure sensor is now fitted. It is usually the case that the sensors are pessimistic and come on when the pressure is not an issue, say when the engine is hot, the oil is thin, and engine is idling. The pressure needs to be about 4 psi under those conditions and the sensor is often set to alarm at 5 psi or less. But at higher rpm the pressures needs to be higher and are specific for each engine. So let me know which engine you have and I can give you the spec at higher rpms to compare with a gauge reading.
The problem if it is below spec could be due to a worn oil pump or to too great clearances on major bearing surfaces within the engine.
But if light is only on at idle and goes off right away when accelerating then I would not be concerned. If the sensor is too pessimistic, then changing that unit would be worthwhile. If it is accurate and the actual pressure is on the margin of spec, then you could increase the viscosity of the oil by one grade to increase the pressure. Finally of course the pump or wear in the engine can prompt pump replacement or engine rebuild. So consider under what conditions the light came on and take action accordingly.
