Chrysler Repair: 1999 T&C Radiator Fan Relay: location?, amp fuse, free chrysler

Question
3.8L 1999 Town & Country with 105,000 miles has been overheating. The radiator fans aren't running. Where is the relay located? Since I am spatially challenged, please tell me the location based on looking at the car.
Thanks for your time.

Answer
Hi Donna,
This may be a challenge to get to if I am correct in my information. According to the Haynes manual it is NOT where many other relays are located, which is under the hood in the long narrow box that sits between the battery and the driver's side fender (there is also the engine controller {shiney thin object with cooling fins}adjacent to that box mounted on the inner fender proper). But just in case you might want to look at that thin box called the power distribution center to see if the label says anything about one of the relays being a fan relay.
Rather, I believe that the fan relay is located underneath the battery/power distribution center, mounted on the metal strutural element of the van's frame which is called the frame rail. You can't miss the rail as it provides the structure to which the front suspension is attached and runs along the inner fender from front to back. Mounted on the top of that rail, near the bottom edge of the radiator fan housing, you should find the relay. It has an electric plug with 4 wires (gray, black, light green/dark blue, and dark green). I suspect that you may have to remove the battery to get at it.
Before you do that though, you might want to check whether there is a 40 amp fuse in position #24 in that power distribution box to see if it has a blown conductive wire inside of it. If that fuse were blown it would also stop the fans.
The best news is that you might be able to get the dealer to replace the relay for free. Chrysler had a recall in the latter '90's on that relay which seems to have caused a similar problem for many van owners. So check with the dealer service manager on that point and if you don't get satisfaction check with Daimler-Chrysler corporate headquarters in Detroit and ask to speak to the recall section.
Please let me know how you work this out so I can share it with others.
