Chrysler Repair: Chrysler lhs: ATC code 36, air distribution system, chrysler lhs

Question
I did a diagnostic check like you suggested in a previous question asked on the board. I received a code 36 and that was it when i did it. I have the problem of heat blowing out of the defrost vents and not being able to control it since the display doesnt show up. So i was wondering what i can do since beating the side of the console is making my hand sore.
Thanks

Answer
Hi Mike,
The code 36 is described as "Head communication failure"* which might be an issue with wiring but because you say the display doesn't show up it is more likely an internal electronic problem in the ATC Control Head unit proper. My inclination would be to go to a pull-it-yourself wrecking yard and find another head unit from an LH body car and try to fix it by substition. I have never seen a manual that discussed the internal troubleshooting of the control unit.
If you are curious though you might remove the old one first, then look for any signs of a failed component which you might be able to replace via an electronics supply.
Maybe you should be happy: it could be worse such as a failure in the air distribution system which is more difficult to get at and to repair.
