Chrysler Repair: 98 cirrus starter fuse blows, digital ohmmeter, starter solenoid

Question
I have had the car since new now = 72000 miles.
Now everytime I try to start the car the 20 amp iignition / starter fuse blows as soon as I turn the ignition key.  ( This happened once before and a new fuse cured the problem for 2000 miles.)  I have heard the PCM unit may be the problem - any ideas before getting a toiw to the garage ?

Answer
HI Steve,
Are you speaking of fuse #8 in the power distribution center box under the hood? If so, there are several possible causes for that fuse to blow: a faulty starter solenoid, a faulty fuel pump, a faulty PCM, a faulty ABS module if so equipped, a faulty starter motor relay among them as well as the wires that are in the circuits. I would not try to solve this problem by throwing parts at it, hoping to hit upon the correct one that needs to be replaced. Rather I would take an ohmmmeter and measure the resistance that fuse 8 is looking at (measusre the resistance to ground of its "cold" pin (54), which would have to be at least 3/4 ohm to keep it from blowing, and if it wasn't then I would try unplugging the various items one at a time to find the one that is drawing too much current/has too low a resistance). If you want to do this yourself you need a digital ohmmeter and the wiring diagrams. I can supply you with the latter.
If you are speaking of a fuse other than #8 let me know. If you want the wiring diagrams let me know a postal mailing address and I will xerox and postal mail them to you. Also please let me know which engine and transmission you have.
