Chrysler Repair: 96 chrysler sebring code 11 &54, cam shaft position sensor, chrysler sebring

Question
when going down the road 1st time i went to accel but nothing, while pushing the gas it started to act like it was cutting out lifted off the gas coasted for a while, the fine a few moments later again.  Then several days later the same thing happened but more times during trip until it died tried to turn it over once then i thought no and had it towed home,  checked timing belt and it was fine then crunk the car and it idles fine, haven't driven it for fear of being stranded.

my tac and odometer intermittenly work and once about 3 days before 1st occurance the gas hand would drop and light would come on but this happened only between 3/4 ths and half of tank.

also put gas in the car then within 30 miles it tried to cut out on me and both times the codes that come up are 12( from a previous incident of trying to trouble shoot a/c problems) 11&54 which are cam shaft and cam shaft position sensor.
I was told to replace the distributor but that is a pricy item to replace and not be the problem. I'm at a loss since the car runs
and by the way the service engine soon light came on the first time and went away after a couple of successful runs.  this time i'm afraid to drive.
please help

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
Again, unless the codes 11 and 54 were erroneous, I think that you need to be ready to check out the situation when the engine has died (using a volt-ohmmmeter) to identify the problem. You can erase the pre-existing fault codes by disconnecting the battery (which will of course reset the 12 code0 and then see if the 11/54 appears again at the next failure. I really wonder about the double (11/54) at the same time unless it is a common mode failure due to the 9V supply going out or a ground connection. Both those would be revealed with a meter when it occurs if the engine refuses to restart. Let me know if you want to be ready.
