Chrysler Repair: 1997 Chrysler Cirrus, obd ii scanner, technical service bulletins

Question
I just bought a 97 cirrus, it has gone into limp mode. I went to Autozone and got a OBD II scanner and it comes up with codes P0700 & P0733 the first is Transaxle fault present and the second is 3rd gear ratio incorrect. I have take the trans pan off and changed the fluid and filter, checked for any metal in the pan there was a very little bit of silver particals which I believe to be normal wear on a car with 120000 miles. I have earased the codes with the scanner but when I drive it and it is ready to go into 3rd gear the check engine light comes back on and the car goes into limp mode again. I would like to find out if there is anyway to test the TCM & if not is there anyway I can bypass the TCM so that I can drive the car? This is my only transportation and I have to drive to California for my daughter. Any help would be greatly appreiciated. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Dave,
I am doubtful that there is a way around this problem. The only possibility would be that there is a basic issue such as: fluid level, engine trouble codes present that need to be corrected, inspect wiring and connectors for faults, see if it passes shift lever position test, have the clutch volumes checked (CVI's), check if the TCM is up to date as far as software, are there any technical service bulletins that are applicable. In the absence of anyother trouble codes, then the 3rd clutch can be tested using a Chrysler Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB III)...If it passes then check the speed sensors, wiring and connectors... if it fails check for an 0870 or 0871 and if present then investigate solenoid pressure switch assembly, otherwise it is confirmed that the clutch is bad which requires a disassembly and repair of internal damage.
It is a long shot, but given time/money constraints it may be your only course to pursue some of these diagnostic tests at a competent trans shop/dealer in hopes it will made roadworthy.
Any possibility of returning it to the seller or somehow getting restitution or warranty service?
The electronic transaxles are expensive to rebuild so it might be worth it get some of the above diagnosis, and possibly the diagnostic test costs would be applied to the repair costs. But I have to say that the ratio fault codes most likely lead to rebuild. As far as I know there is no way to beat the controller and bypass the issue. And a controller fault would set its own separate code. You were wise to do the drain, look for debris etc. I assume that you used the Mopar 7176 or equivalent (not Dexron III) for refill, otherwise that could be a "basic issue".
I hope this is helpful to you, Dave. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do. My technical suggestions are derived from a Chrysler trans service manual (2004), and not based on any personal experience with these units.
