Chrysler Repair: 1988 lebaron convertible problems, internal switch, electrical contact

Question
Hi I have a 1988 lebaron. I bought it off my grandfather. He had it stored in his garage for 8 years before I rescued it. Anyway I love the car. I want to know if the top comes down by a push of a button or do I put it down manually. It goes up without a hitch but currently I have been putting is down manually. Please help  me. Thanks

Answer
Hi Vicky,
The top should power up and down. If it won't activate the motor when you try pushing the switch in the opposite direction from putting it up, then I would suspect that the switch contact is dirty internally which you might correct by spraying inside the body of the switch with electrical contact cleaner available at an electronics supply store. If that doesn't work, then there is a relay in the trunk which similarly has internal switch contacts that may be dirty and similarly treated to see if you can get the motor to run in the reverse direction.
The relay is mounted next to the motor, on the mounting bracket. If you hear it click when you try to put down the top, then the switch in the cabin is o.k. and you don't need to worry about cleaning it, instead focus on the relay. If you get no click when you try to lower the top, then clean the switch in the cabin first. And if that doesn't correct the problem, then clean the relay with spray contact cleaner.
