Chrysler Repair: Chrysler Lebaron - transmission, chrysler lebaron, gauge cluster

Question
Hi Roland,
I asked you a question about my 91 Lebaron regarding the gauge cluster and you were very helpful. Thanks.
I now have another question regarding the transmission. My Lebaron has the 3.0 engine with the 3-speed auto. Is it a difficult process to swap it out for a 5-speed tranny? I understand the console is slightly different and a clutch will have to be installed but would a typical transmission house be able to do this or is there a lot of customizing that would make it cost prohibitive, or not worth it. Thanks, Ken   P.S. my transmission seems to be working fine, but would love the 5-speed.

Answer
Hi Ken,
I know it can be done but how much fabrication/parts acquisition from wrecking yards will be necessary is unknown to me. I would suggest that you contact the membership of either Yahoo Auto Groups that specialize in LeBarons (don't double post because most people are following or participating in both of them) One is called The Chrysler LeBaron Club, the other is called Chrysler LeBaron and it is simple to sign up and read the messages and post your question. That is where I learned about what you are wanting to do. By the way, if you have the 3-speed non-electronic automatic does that mean that you have the GTS model? because I thought that the Convertible/Coupe with the 3.0L always had the 4-speed automatic.
