Classic/Antique Car Repair: 64 Ford Ranchero - fuel pump blowing fuses, 1964 ford ranchero, electric fuel pump

Question
Hi Vern,
My brother is having the following problem:

"1964 Ford Ranchero 2.3  4cyl 117000 miles, replaced the fuel pump (electric in the tank) the fuel pressure regulator, the fuel filter , the fuse and the fuel pump relay.  The fuse blows about every 3 weeks and I am looking for a technical service bulletin which might show that Ford has encountered said problems with other Rangers".

Have you heard anything on early model fords with similar fues problems?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jim:
Unfortunately, the transportation safety board didn't require automotive manufacturers to perform and track recalls and defects until the mid 70's. Record keeping didn't really kicked in in 1982. So most likely there wouldn't be any bulletins on your 64 Ford. However, I check my sources and came up empty.

It's clear there is a short somewhere. The fact that you have an electric fuel pump, you should check to make sure there are no exposed wiring and also make sure the gauge wire used is correct. Third, make sure the fuse is the right amps for that pump.

You should fine the problem in one of the above areas.
