Chrysler Repair: 90 Lebaron Digital Dash dead., power supply failure, electrolytic capacitor

Question
I bought a 90 Lebaron 2 dr coupe 3.0 V6 4spd auto for my daughter it only has 72K on it. My problem is the digital dash has only worked twice since I bought it,the check engine light is the only thing that ever comes on when you turn the key on.
I pulled the cluster sprayed all the pins and contact sockets with electro-cleaner and the light
and dimmer switch contacts also, which I read could
be the problem with digital dashes. I have'nt tried the switch yet as they are $120+.I read on
your site about the computer possible getting corroded from water dripping on it so next I am
pulling the computer and spraying the contacts
with contact cleaner,I also added a extra ground
from the battery to the dash to be sure of a good
ground.Do you think I need a new dash cluster.
Any info would be a big help,Thanks.

Answer
Hi Wlliam,
The power supply for the cluster comes from fuse socket #14 which should get power from the ignition switch in the "run" position and it arrives on pin 12 of the red plug at the cluster on a dark blue/white wire. So check for that pathway to be present. It sounds like you already verified the ground. So if that doesn't fix it, you might check the circuit board for the cluster to see if you can find a blown electrolytic capacitor that is causing the power supply failure. The variable intensity voltage should be found on pin 1 of the red plug. So you could try jumping 12V to that point on the cluster as a test of it unless you do show a variable voltage on the orange wire as you vary the intensity control switch. The ground is on pin7.
Good luck on your troubleshooting.
