GMC Repair: I have a 1997 GMC Sonoma...., gmc sonoma, screw driver

I have a 1997 GMC Sonoma.  I have to step on the brake to get it out of park. the problem is that it will not come out of park.  When I push the button on the handle, I hear a clicking noise in the coulumn.  How do I fix this so I can get it into gear?

Is the gear selector on the column or console? If it is on the console there should be a little hole with a cap on the console close to the gear shift lever. Take the cap off and you can use a small screw driver to push down on the pin that locks the lever in place. Is this two wheel or 4 wheel drive? Let me know. Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
