Chrysler Repair: knocking noise from front end, cherokee jeep, jeep line

i have  a grande cherokee jeep 1996 orvis there is a annoying knocking noise from front left centre of vehicle i have checked anti roll bar bushes they are ok any ideas bob

Answer
Hi David,
I do not claim expertise with the Jeep line of vehicles so it is guesswork on my part. If this seems to be associated with suspension motion due to road unevenness then besides the antiroll bar you might want to check the strut mount at the top bolts or the spring cushions. If it seems to be related to the rotational motion of the wheels, then there is often a noise that develops when a cv-boot leaks and looses sufficient grease for the joint to run dry. It is characterized by clicking that is proportional to the mph and is usually exacerbated by turns from the straight ahead direction.
You might be able to go to a front end shop and ask them for a check to see what they can find and then decide if you want to handle it yourself once they identify the source of the noise. That should be a fairly inexpensive diagnosis if you chose to do it yourself nonetheless.
So if you think it might be the cv joint let me know and I can tell you a bit more about fixing that.
