I seem to be having a problem and i dont know if its the radiator or a hose or the radiator cap.

the problem is that when i have the car on  the top hose from the radiator at the cap starts to expand like a balloon i switched caps to a thirteen pound cap then both top and bottom hose were sucked in.

so i put the old cap back on the problem went away but now it has come back.

someone told me to take the thermostat out.
you have been right on with other problems i have had that id value your opinion better as to what i should try. thank you for any and all help.

Hi Paul,
You didn't mention the year and engine of your car so I can't be sure what pressure the cap should release at. But it is important to stick with what ever the system was designed for by Chrysler. Also the collapse of the hoses on cool down suggests that the cap that you bought was not designed for a system with an overflow bottle, otherwise it should have opened during cool down to allow the increase level of fluid in the overflow bottle to be sucked back in to return it to the radiator rather than to collapse the hoses. So I would make sure that any cap you get is the correct pressure and designed for an overflow bottle type of system. Then see if the hoses still balloon up. It could be that the hose is just worn out and needs replacement. But you should see that the level of fluid in the overflow bottle rises when the engine has reached operating temperature compared to the level when it was cold, and then conversely the fluid level should return to the original level when the system cools. There is a small vent valve in the middle of the cap that has to be of the correct design to allow the expansion and contraction of the water in the system in both directions.
Does the engine seem to be running hot based on the gauge reading? I would not remove the thermostat in any case but rather try to find out what is the problem, because the engine will not run at an efficient temperature without a thermostat.

Answer
Hi Paul,
My '95 manual states that the 2.5L SOHC engine radiator cap should open at 11-15 psi, and not lower than 9.2 psi as the limit. The 2.4L DOHC is 16 psi. The thermostats are also different: opening at 180 and and 195 and full open at 203 and 218, respectively. So see if you can get a cap that fits the spec for your engine that is appropriate for an overflow bottle type of set up.
