Answer
Hi Rob,
I am not familiar at all with diesel engines. Another question came this morning from another 'Robert' with a somewhat similar history to which I could suggest a couple of basic possibilities:
First check the ground wire of the -post of the battery where it attaches to the body, and also the grond wires from the -post to the engine block/head.
Second consider the ignition switch for a possibly flakey contact by jiggling the key in the lock when it cuts out or to try an induce a cut out when it is running.
Finally, have a code readout done on the engine controller at a dealership for any faults that might have been recognized and then ask to see the powertrain diagnostic manual at the dealer for your specific engine and review the possibilities for the causes of any fault codes that are revealed. Then follow up on each of those, starting with the least expensive option.
Unfortunately because I have never worked on a diesel and have no manuals for them specifically, I can't give you any suggestions in depth.
