Chrysler Repair: breke release to allow you to shift, direstion, educated guess

Question
2000 intrepid that you have to apply brake to but into gear. just went to use the car and i applied  the brake to shift into drive and it wont shift. is it a relay?

Answer
Hi Charlie,
I have to admit a lack of a manual for a car as new as a 2000. The only hint I have is from a '95 Sebring manual that shows there to be a cable connection between the brake pedal and the shift lever (as well as a second cable between the ignition lock and that lever). So I believe that if you can't get it out of Park in order to go into reverse there is a mechanical issue either with the connection of the cable to the brake pedal lever arm or the adjustment at the other end of the cable at the base of the shifter lever. So see if you can find that cable in your 2000 Intrepid and inspect it to verify the motion of the cable at the lever when you step on the brake and if it moves perhaps adjust it. You may be able to move the adjuster in the direstion that the brake pedal causes it to move in order to get it to release the shift lever. That is an educated guess on my part. It does not appear to be an electrical interlock but rather a mechanical type so a relay is not likely to be involved if it designed similarly to the Sebring.
