Chrysler Repair: 88 new yorker-voltage improper, code translation, needle position

Question
my engine light just came on and my info center says improper voltage. The car has been barely turning over sometimes in the past few days . Is this likely to be a voltage regulator?

Answer
Hi Sherrie,
You didn't mention which engine is in your car, and I do presume that it is fuel injected. But in any case my suspicion would not be the regulator (which in the fuel injected situation is built-in to the overall engine controller and not separately replaceable) but rather the alternator itself which is much more likely to wear out. If you have a voltage guage it might be noticeable as a lower than normal needle position, or there may be a warning light that says "electrical..." which is what you may be referring to as your info center. There is actually a self-readout capability of the engine controller for specific fault codes about the voltage situation so I would suggest that you try that. Turn the ignition key "on-off-on-off-on and leave it on" (doing this within 5 seconds elapsed time). You will see the check engine light will remain illuminated but then begin to flash, pause, flash, pause, etc. Count the number of flashes before each pause, keep track of the numbers in the order they come out. Group them in pairs to form two digit fault codes. The last such code will always be 55 (end of readout). Then write back for a code translation and advice.
