Chrysler Repair: transmission swap, roland roland, intermediate shaft

Question
Can I swap the transmission from an "86"new yorker
2.2 turbo into a "91" plymouth acclaim 2.5 ?

Answer
Hi Tim,
You didn't mention which transmission is involved, I assume it is a three-speed non-electronic automatic, correct? If not tell me about it. The bell housing attachment to the 2.2 and 2.5 are identical, I believe. The 2.2 turbo trans does not have a torque converter lock-up capability but other than that it should be compatible electrically, because that is the only electronic aspect of that trans in the non-turbo setting. I am not certain about other issues that might be important, so you might ask further at other sites specializing in Chrysler vehicles. There could be something quite obvious that I am not familiar with. For example the turbo trans on the right side has an intermediate shaft so that its right shaft will be equal in length to the left shaft. But the non-turbo doesn't use the intermediate shaft and has unequal length driveshafts. I would want to verify that the fittings of the trans that receive the right shaft are nonetheless identical because you will probably need to reuse the '91 shafts with the '86 input shaft receptacle.
