Chrysler Repair: lifters, carravan, oil system

Question
I have a 1999 caravan and the lifters are starting to make noise what is a good fix ie replace lifters ,additive ect I notice all carravan are making this noise ? what is the problem here? what is failing thakyou in advance peter

Answer
Hi Peter,
I haven't noticed that but then I am not looking for it either. In my experience the tappet sounds occur due to insufficient oil pressure to the lifters and that can be caused by crud in the supply line to them or due to the oil being too thin. I know that there was some emphasis on using 5w-30 oil for low temp operation, but that results in lower than optimal oil pressure for most of the year. So my inclination would be to try 10W-30 next drain and refill to see if that quiets them down. I also know that there were a spate of problems with I think the 2.7 and 3.2L engines but I am unaware that those were used in the vans. The issue there was premature wear on the engine due to a faulty oil  system that produced cruddy oil which if that were the case might cause the lifter problems you are describing. But that wasn't a problem with the engines that are more likely to be found in the vans which to my knowledge were not those two.
