Chrysler Repair: fuel light, fuel level sensor, dodge deisel

Question
Just a shot in the dark with this one because you say you don't work on trucks. I have 98 Dodge deisel
2500 and when the fuel gets below 3/4, the fuel light comes on and the needle falls to empty, then a few seconds later the needle goes back to its original position and then it falls again and this continues until I fill the tank. Any suggestions. Thanks David

Answer
Hi David,
I appreciate your recognizing my limitations!
But let me give you a thought. Because this only happens once the level drops below 3/4 tankful, it pretty much has to be involved with the fuel level sensor unit in the gas tank itself. If it were due to a problem external to the tank, then it would seem to me it would be independent of the level in the tank.
So I would go to the tank and see if there is a separate level unit that is removable without disturbing the fuel pump. If so, I would take it out and check the contact for the float level that touches against the variable resistor wire surface that is usually associated with the level sensor unit.
