Auto Airbag System Repair: Airbag, horn, and cruise failed, crown victoria police interceptor, airbag system

Question
QUESTION: Sometime last year my horn and cruise control went out on my 2003 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. We were told it was the clockspring. We just replaced the clockspring today and the cruise works, so we know it's good. But the horn still doesn't work and the airbag light is still on. Any ideas as to what may be causing this problem?

ANSWER: Hi Brandon:

Your vehicle can help us answer the questions you pose.  The airbag light will flash a code for you when you first turn it on.  Check out our company website www.airbagsolutions.com and research the clockspring and fault codes on the following free pages:
Resources
Components
Scanner
From among those pages you can get a full understanding of the diagnostics on Ford vehicles and then help to uncover what is wrong with the airbag system.  You do not need to buy a subscription yet.  Let me know what you find & we'll continue together.

The horn may not be a simple (go figure)

QUESTION: OK I checked your site and found how to read the light. I could not access the list of fault codes w/o a subscription, and I didn't want to subscribe to anything. The light gave me a code of 42. Could you tell me what it means and how to fix it?

Answer
Hi Brandon:
A code 42 on your vehicle is a front sensor problem.  Typically, the sensor itself goes bad or the wire and plug to it get corroded.
Although the code points to a specific circuit, it cannot tell you exactly what it takes to repair it.  Take a look at the sensor and wiring (with the battery disconnected) and you can tell if that's the problem.  It is located in front of the radiator mounted to the vertical core support.

A new sensor is about $50 and the wire plug harness is about $30

Good luck
