Chrysler Repair: Cooling fan, chrysler new yorker, coolant temp

Question
I have a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker.A couple of weeks ago,I turned off the car,but the rad fan kept going. It went for about 2 minutes without stopping.I then put the key in and turned it a couple of times to the on position ,it stopped right away. After that the fan operated well.today i go out and the fan does not turn on at all.I don't here a click from the relay to start the fan.could the relay have gone bad,or could there be something else.Ken

Answer
Hi Ken,
The radiator fan does not come regardless of the engine temperature except in two conditions, when you ask for air conditioning or ask for windshield defrost... it will come on and stay on until you turn off the ignition switch or turn off the a/c or turn off the defrost setting. At all other times the fan will only come on when the coolant temp sensor on the engine reaches a control temperature, and it will shut off if the temp drop below a control temperature, and it should shut off when you turn off the ignition.
I suspect that the first time when the fan kept running that the fan relay was stuck closed. In cold weather the fan may not come on, unless you set the air distribution for defrosting of the windshield. So I would not be surprised that the fan didn't come on today. So the best way to check the relay is to try the a/c setting or the defrost setting.
Let me know if it isn't working that way. My first suspicion would be the relay.
