Chrysler Repair: 1998 Chrysler Town & Country LXi - Cruise Control, nhtsa web, chrysler corp

Question
Recently the Cruise Control and horn have quit working on our 1998 Chrysler Town & Country LXi - about the same time as the "Airbag" light came on the dash.  Could these all be linked to a simple electrical eliment?

Answer
Hi Chris,
Yes, there is a recall and Chyrsler will replace it for free. The recall is #O4V480000 as listed at the NHTSA web site. And they will reimburse you if it has already been paid for. You can contact the dealer of the Chrysler Corp. via their website www.Chrysler.com

Hi Chris,
Another reader of the Chrysler repair site pointed out that the clockspring in the '98 was recalled as defective and should be replaced free of charge by Chrysler. I will try to verify that, but you may want to try to get the dealer to do it for free or get your money refunded if you already paid them to do it

Hi Chris,
There is one common element in all those systems: the "clockspring" that connects the steering wheel controls and airbag to the steering column wiring harness. These are very fine wires that are wrapped in a circular pattern very similar to a watch balance wheel spring. It is surprising that all of them would malfunction at once, so the other possibility I would suggest you take a look at is whether one of the disconnects at the steering column mid-section  under the dash has separated and merely needs to be reconnected. I don't have the wiring colors for the horn or the air bag, but the cruise wires are black/light green, red/light green, and light blue/red, so if you find those wires and the disconnect for them you could check its condition. If it seems intact, then the clockspring' internal wiring is probably separated.
