Chrysler Repair: heat, head gasket failure, chrysler lebaron

Question
Morning Roland:
I'm tired of being cold in the mornings. This matter has been going on around two years now and I don't want to go through another winter being cold in my vehicle. First of all, here is a little background history of this 1992 Chrysler Lebaron with a 3.0 V6. The temperature gauge never gets above the 1/4 mark during the winter. The electric fan comes on during defrost like it designed to do. I have changed the radiator, I have reversed the heater hoses (about two years ago). I have changed the thermostat, I have tried a new temp sending unit, I have flushed the system, and still doesn't get warm enough during the cold weather months. There is no signs of head gasket failure,I have checked both the radiator reservoir and the overflow, it doesn't use anti-freeze, no signs of water pump leaking, and no signs of leaking of the heater core. By process of elimnation, I suspect it is the heater core. Any information would be appreciated in the procedure of changing the core.  Have I overlooked something else before I would attemp that task? Thanks

Answer
Hi Ron,
I would suggest that you touch the two hoses that go to and from the heater core, on the engine compartment side, to see if they feel about equally warm when you have the unit set up to provide heat. If one is much cooler than the other then there is some sort of obstruction in the cooolant flow thru the heater core. If they are about the same, and warm, then the issue is probably with the blend air door whose position is determined by the temperature lever on the control unit. The cable that is attached to that lever may be out of adjustment such that the incoming air is not being directed across the heater coils but is rather being by-passed to the a/c evaporator coils. There is a procedure for adjusting that cable, but the most efficient way to get that is for me to xerox and postal mail you a copy of it. So let me know how the touch test for cable temps turns out.
And if you think it might be the blend air door cable let me know you postal mailing address. I would not be too concerned with the reading of the temp gauge. More important is how hot does the coolant get which you might be able to assess with a thermometer. It should run around 195 F.
