Chrysler Repair: 5th gear problem chrysler stratus 1996, chrysler stratus 1996, incorrect assembly

Question
Hallo Mr Finston,

I own a Chrysler Stratus LE, build 1996, and for some time now, it jumps out of the 5th gear into idle when I reach speeds in excess of 120km/h. My garagist says I'd have to replace the gearbox to solve the problem, but could you maybe suggest something less costly. Thank you

Answer
Hi Tjaard,
I have the '96 Stratus shop manual and it says that besides an internal transmission issue (worn gear teeth or synchronizers) there could be a problem with misaligned or damaged shift components, or "incorrect assembly" though not specified as to what sort.
So I would suggest that you evaluate the shift components and eliminate that as the cause before considering removal and repair of the trans itself. I can xerox and mail the pages from the manual that describe the shifter and its adjustment. If you want the pages send me a postal mailing address.
